Tottenham Hotspur’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Dawson-c25288 wants to bounce back into the Champions League – EPL news
Tottenham Hotspur http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Captain-c8314 Michael Dawson, has claimed that Spurs are aiming for a top four finish in the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League campaign in order to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League once more. The London club will miss out on this season’s
tournament after losing their place to Manchester City over the last few weeks of the Premier League campaign.
Spurs enjoyed a fantastic debut campaign in the Champions League this season. The London club went all the way to the quarter-finals, before being knocked out by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid. However, they will be unable to build on their stellar run, having failed to qualify
for the tournament by finishing fifth in the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League campaign. Their place in the standings has earned them a spot in the UEFA Europa League, however, it is an achievement that fans are not particularly excited about.
The Europa League is a massive drain of a club’s resources, and many believe that the payoff is not worth the effort. The prize money for winning the competition is 3 million Euros. Compare that with the 3.9 million Euros a team receives just for qualifying
for the group stages of the Champions League, and it’s easy to see why there is a sense of disappointment around White Hart Lane.
Spurs captain, Michael Dawson, earlier refuted claims that his side see the Europa League as a distraction. He claimed that Tottenham will try their absolute best to win the title. However, Dawson has now made it clear that the club’s main goal is to find
a way back into the Champions League.
Speaking on the matter, he said, “As players we want to be in the Champions League, but we’ve been on a great journey this season having finished fourth last year. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite do that again this year, but that’s the aim next year. We’ll
come back ready after a good rest and hopefully we can do it, as tough as it will be with the good teams that are in there.”
