Tottenham Hotspur’s William Gallas optimistic about the new Premier League season
Optimism may not win everything, but it does take a team a long way towards achieving its goals. The latest signing by Tottenham Hotspur has said that his new team Spurs has the capability of winning the Premier League title this year.
Tottenham completed the signing of Gallas over a free transfer from city rivals Arsenal. Spurs is Gallas’ 3rd team in London after having successful spell at Chelsea before moving to the Gunners (Arsenal; 2006-2010). Gallas said that the team has enough potential to match the big teams this season step by step.
Gallas said that there are young players in the team that have enough quality to mix it with the best. He said that it is just a matter of making them realise their potential, and manager Harry Redknapp is the man who can do that. The London club has won the English League twice; they did it last in 1961. However, of late, it has been Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea who have dominated the league.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said that Gallas is man with immense experience in the game, and having spent the last decade in England with two of the topmost clubs in the league, he would be a great asset for their team.
Gallas won two Premier League titles and the Carling Cup with Chelsea before making a switch to the city rivals Arsenal. The French defender trained with his new teammates on Monday following his transfer that was completed on Saturday as the terms between both clubs were completed. The deal is believed to be for one year, with an option of one-year extension after that.
He said that he is enjoying his time at Spurs and likes the environment in the team, and cannot wait to get in on the action and win some games for his side. He said that the decision of moving to Tottenham was a very easy one for him, as he was just not getting what he wanted at Arsenal. Gallas said that he would love to be part of a team that is on its way up, and Redknapp is the man who can take Spurs to the next level as he has already done.
William Gallas, who was part of the French team in the World Cup, said that he knows he is not the youngest member in the team, but he wants to get into shape and prove to his new teammates that he has the ability to still give the best defenders in the league a run (pun intended) for their money.
The former Arsenal man was not registered by Spurs for the European competition, but he said that he has no doubt that his new team would be able to overturn a 3-2 first leg deficit. Arsenal play Young Boys in the 2nd leg of the Champions League qualifying match.
Gallas is not the first player to have played for the two bitter city rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. Before him, it was Jimmy Robertson back in late 60s and early 70s. Steve Walford (Spurs 1975-77/Arsenal 1977-81) was the 2nd one, followed by Pat Jennings (Spurs 1964-77/Arsenal 1977-85) and more recently, Sol Campbell (Spurs 1992-2001/Arsenal 2001-06). However, all the players mentioned here went from Spurs to Arsenal; Gallas is the first high profile player to have gone the other way.
