Tottenham Hotspur’s potential summer transfer window targets – English Premier League (Part 2)
After elaborating on why Tottenham should invest in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Dawson-c25288, it is now time to highlight their offensive frailties which were a major cause of concern for the Spurs’
faithful fans in the 2010-2011 season...
Diego Forlan
After impressing at the FIFA 2010 World Cup, Forlan disappointed in the 2010-2011 La Liga season with Atletico Madrid. Forming a formidable striking combination with Kun Aguero, the Uruguayan striker failed to maintain his form
into the league season as his reputation as well as his goal scoring statistics dwindled as the season progressed onwards. Now as the Spanish league season has come to an end with Barcelona’s triumph, Forlan is being touted up as Harry Redknapp’s top transfer
target keeping in mind Tottenham’s failure to sign a top class forward in the January transfer window.
In January of 2011, the realization was there but as the winter transfer window is a short one, Redknapp failed to sign a striker to reinvigorate his offensive force. Looking at Tottenham’s offensive statistics, it is not surprising
to see that Redknapp’s top transfer striker is a well reputed goal scoring machine. In the 2010-2011 season Tottenham’s strike force consisted of Roman Pavlyuchenko, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robbie-Keane-c31215. While Keane was out on loan for a large part
of the season, the rest were busy trying to fight their way into Redknapp’s first team line up.
In the past season, Defoe was the lowest contributor from Spurs’ strike force as the speedy Englishman just scored four goals in his 22 appearances for Redknapp’s team in the Premier League. Second comes, Peter Crouch who netted
four goals in 34 matches for Hotspurs. The most effective goal scorer for Tottenham in the English Premier League was their Russian target-man http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roman-Pavlyuchenko-c31639 with 11 goals in 29 league appearances.
These statistics mean that Tottenham’s strikers netted 19 goals in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-c11058 Forlan. Before the season kicked off,
Tottenham were banking on the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rafael-c30339 Van der Vaart and Jermain Defoe combo to fire them to glory. However Defoe never really combined with Tottenham’s Dutch playmaker who was impressive throughout the previous season.
Tottenham will most probably go in for Diego Forlan with a formal bid sooner rather than later. Forlan’s loss of form at Atletico Madrid means that he will most probably pounce at an opportunity to revive his career in the English
Premier League. Also Forlan’s addition means that Tottenham are guaranteed a sure shot 15-25 goals from the Uruguayan goal scorer. When supplied by the likes of Bale, Modric and Van der Vaart that tally is destined to rise given that Redknapp uses the experienced
striker in small but effective dosages.
Forlan’s addition to the squad when complimented by other back-up figures like Defoe and Peter Crouch will add strength in depth to Tottenham’s squad. Such a transfer signature will also boost their chances of securing a UEFA Champions
League qualification place in the next season. It remains to be seen what happens from now onwards in the summer transfer window but what is sure is that Redknapp must not fail in signing a striker like Diego Forlan.
