Tottenham Spurs Manager Harry Redknapp criticizes big money clubs
The English manager of Tottenham Hotspurs, Harry Redknapp has claimed that football fans don’t care about who owns a club as long as their team is winning and have huge amounts of cash to buy world class players.
While speaking to the media, Redknapp was critical about Manchester City, who have a rich owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He stated that money was the reason for the increasing numbers of fans for Manchester City. The citizens have already signed off many star players this season but their manager Roberto Mancini has informed that his eyes are still scouring the market for world class players. It has been hinted that the club is looking forward to spend 60 million pounds on 3 players.
They just spent around 80 million pounds on players and with the financial backing they have they are going to include more players with the inevitable contract of defender Aleksandar Kolarov from Serbia.
While talking to the media Redknapp expressed, “There's nothing you can do. They're bringing good players into the Premier League”. He added, “Football fans don't care. The players don't care. Saddam Hussein could own your football club and, if he's putting millions into it, they'll be quite happy. They'll be singing, there's only one Saddam”.
The Tottenham manager stated that he had seen all kinds of situations including ones like this. He reckoned that the fans don’t care the slightest where they money comes from as long as you are putting it in the right place.
The 62-year old Redknapp also said that he thought the Citizen’s wealth would be the reason for their victory in the English Premier League this season. In saying so he also acknowledged that the Light Blues would be a major threat this season.
The Englishman clarified, “Manchester City are bringing in top, top players. I said last year they could win the championship and they could win it this year. Eventually they're going to win it”. He added, “It makes my job more challenging. We're on another planet. They go and pay £200,000 a week, or three times as much for their top players as we could”.
However, the manager also said that the Spurs were no less a threat in the EPL this season and if all goes well they will be able to achieve the title this time. He wished them good luck for the season. He stated that the men from White Hart Lane finished above them last season and will hopefully to do so again. The manager added that he was eagerly looking forward to their encounter against them.
Spurs entered the top 4 last season, with Chelsea 1st, Manchester United 2nd, Arsenal came in 3rd, while Tottenham finished fourth ahead of Manchester City. Liverpool was knocked off its spot and came in 7th below Aston Villa.
With the growing strength at City, the Spurs will have to sign in a couple of new players to counter the skill and talent storming at Manchester City. Redknapp has clearly yet presented his plans to refurnish his squad stating earlier that the talent he had at White Hart Lane was enough but they are looking forward to lay a couple of bids. Joe Cole was their target but they lost him to Liverpool and similar was the story with a couple more. They will have to finalise their decisions as the season draws closer. They are planning to sign up the Brazilian midfielder, Sandro, but will have to close fast as interest from other clubs is also sparked up.
The manager has stated, “We need to bring in two or three really good players if we're to maintain what we did last year. It's got harder the higher up the league I've gone, but this is the time to have a go.”
Redknapp said that in the past Tottenham has spent a lot of money on talent but they haven’t availed much from it. However, the club now stands at a point where they can utilise their position to bring some good players and capitalise on them. He also told that he was looking for the right kind of players that would fit into the team and present a natural combo with other team members.
Redknapp stated, “There's still value in the transfer market, but you've got to be a genius. You've got to go and find somebody, but top players, they want top wages. That's your problem.”
