Tottenham and Sevilla battle it out for Derek Boateng
Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in Derek Boateng, the Ghanaian midfielder currently playing at Getafe. Harry Redknapp is keeping a close eye on the tough tackling 27-year-old, who seems to impress everywhere he goes.
Boateng is in his second season with Getafe, before impressing in the La Liga with the Spanish side the midfielder was an important part of the squad in FC Koln in Germany. He started his career with the Israeli side Betar Jerusalem and since then has established
himself as a tough attacking midfielder.
Sources reveal that Tottenham will face relentless competition from Sevilla to sign the Ghanaian midfielder; however both sides are determined to sign him. Angel Torres, the Getafe president will not want to sell Boateng in January though, so Tottenham and
Sevilla will have to wait until next summer.
Boateng is valued at £5 million and will be on his way out if the price is met. He previously attracted interest from Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion, but the move never went through. More Premier League sides are now showing interest and a move to
England seems inevitable.
Boateng was essential in leading Ghana to the 2010 World Cup quarter finals in South Africa; he kept the entire midfield organized and was the key to their success. He is an aggressive midfielder and dominates the middle of the pitch.
He is a comparatively younger player but has displayed exceptional leadership qualities; he reads the game well and drives the team forward with his relentless pace. In some ways the player can be compared to Michael Essien in his playing style, the position
the two play in is different though.
If Spurs do sign the Getafe midfielder, he will have a lot of competition to secure his place in the first team. Luka Modric, Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone are all top contenders for the starting 11 and Redknapp will have to sell a few players if he plans
to bring in new signings at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham are also showing interest in out of favour Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Benzema has been out of favour since Jose Mourinho took over at Real Madrid and Redknapp believes that he will do much better to join the Spurs in the next summer transfer
window.
