The 25-year-old has insisted that he would prefer joining Harry Redknapp's side ahead of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 this summer; expresses his love for the North London club
Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has insisted that he will prefer joining Tottenham Hotspur over a switch to Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Belgian stopper, who is considered as one of the best centre-backs playing in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753, has made it clear that the Lilywhites are absolutely his favourite, and has expressed his desire that both clubs soon reach an agreement
over a potential move.
“Tottenham are absolutely my favourite. But the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in year. I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will
soon reach an agreement”, Vertonghen was quoted as saying to De Telegraaf.
The Belgian International, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2006, has insisted that the Amsterdammers management should show flexibility in their asking price.
“I owe much to Ajax, but I've always given my whole heart and soul to the club. My appreciation for the club and the fans is great. It would be terrible if my farewell is marred or distorted because Ajax are stubborn with the asking
price. Of course I want Ajax to gain financially, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think - perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable”, Vertonghen concluded.
The highly-rated central defender has thus far played 146 matches for the Amsterdam giants. The 25-year-old has been highly regarded due to his impressive and consistent performances at the back. However, his ability to find the
back of the net every now and then makes him one of the best defenders in Europe.
Vertonghen has an ongoing contract at De Joden that runs until the summer of 2013, but it is widely expected that he will be joining a top European club before the start of the 2012/13 season.
Reports indicate that the Ajax management will not let go their prized asset for anything less than 12 million Euros.
