Tottenham assistant manager Kevin Bond backs Peter Crouch
Tottenham assistant manager Kevin Bond has spoke out in support of goal-shy striker Peter Crouch, insisting his “contribution” to the team has been “fantastic.”
Crouch has scored just one Premier League goal so far this term – in last weekend’s 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers. His poor goalscoring record has led to many White Hart Lane regulars
dishing out the criticism at the former Portsmouth and Liverpool man, but Bond wants them to take a look at the bigger picture.
Bond told the club’s official website: “Peter's contribution to the team week in, week out has been fantastic. He's made a number of goals for Rafa (Van der Vaart), he always gives 100
per cent and his stats are always fantastic but he's a striker and he needs goals, so it was great for him to get one against Blackburn on Saturday. His goalscoring record is fantastic, he's just had a difficult start in the league this season. He's a great,
all-round professional, level-headed and so low maintenance it's unbelievable. He's fully-focused, a great lad and a pleasure to work with.”
There’s no doubt summer-signing Rafael van der Vaart would back up Bond’s assessment, as the Dutchman owes the majority of his goals to the England forward’s knock-downs and clever link-up
play. Crouch has been Harry Redknapp’s favoured striking option this season, especially in the wake of Jermain Defoe’s injury problems. He has seen Crouch selflessly link up with van der Vaart on countless occasions but with Spurs gunning for top honours this
term, is that going to be enough to tempt Redknapp away from the transfer market in the summer? Despite contributing six assists this campaign, Crouch needs to be finding the back of the net more regularly otherwise he may find Spurs outgrow his “contribution.”
