The former Ajax stopper has revealed that he does not like playing at the left-back position, and wants to return to his normal position in the heart of the defence.
Tottenham Hotspur defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has revealed that playing as a centre-back is his preferred position, while adding that he does not enjoy playing at the left-back position.
The 25-year-old has been plying his trade at the left-back position since Benoit Assou-Ekotto suffered a knee injury in September.
Reports now confirm that Assou-Ekotto would be returning to pitch in the coming weeks, and the Belgian stopper has made it clear that he wants to return to his preferred position in the heart of the defence.
The former Ajax defender has also confirmed that his coach, Andre Villas-Boas, knows about his preference to play as a central defender.
“Yes, and the manager knows. I prefer centre-back but I want to help the team. It would be good to have Benoit back but not only for that reason as he is one of the best left-backs in the league”, Vertonghen was quoted as saying to the media.
The Spurs will lock horns against Aston Villa in their upcoming Premier League game at Villa Park on Wednesday, December 26.
And the Belgian stopper has heaped praise on the Villans front-man, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christian-Benteke-c9056, who has been making headlines for all the good reasons week in week out with his dazzling performances.
“It doesn't surprise me that he has done well. He now feels the confidence of the team, the crowd and the manager. He is very good in the air and he can score. He will be a very tough player to play against”, Vertonghen added.
Benteke, who arrived at Villa Park before the start of the ongoing 2012/13 campaign after making 41 league appearances for Genk, has thus far netted eight goals in 17 games in all competitions.
And the 25-year-old central defender has insisted that the Villans made an excellent signing in the summer transfer window.
“I think that Aston Villa made the right choice to sign him”, Vertonghen concluded.
The Belgian stopper would be hoping that his side could keep Benteke quiet in the upcoming game in order to enhance their chances of claiming all three points at the end.
