Tottenham score three on Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane
Tottenham secured qualification to the knock-out stage of the Champions League on Wednesday 24 November, beating German team Werder Bremen 3–0 at White Hart Lane.
Gareth Bale tainted another fine performance with a penalty miss in the second half, but goals from Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch were enough to see the dominant Spurs confirm their position at the top of Group A ahead of Inter
Milan.
The home fans found reason to cheer with only six minutes gone, as Aaron Lennon left Daniel Jensen trailing to cross for Kaboul, who hit a volley from eight yards to score for the second game running.
Roman Pavlyuchenko could have doubled Spurs' lead when Bale skipped past Clemens Fritz in leisurely fashion to cross for Crouch, but the Russian failed to convert his striking partner's headed pass from ten yards out.
In injury time of the first half, Modric added an important second goal after Crouch nodded down a ball that the Croatian controlled and struck past Tim Wiese in the Bremen goal.
Seven minutes into the second half, Bale stepped up for a free kick, curling the ball delightfully over the wall only to see it bounce off the crossbar.
Wiese saves from Bale
Two minutes later, the Welshman was given a chance to redeem the miss when Felix Kroos brought down the instrumental Modric inside the Bremen box, but Bale hit the spot kick straight at Wiese, who parried with ease.
Jermain Defoe, on for Pavlyuchenko in the 57th minute, drove towards the Bremen box seven minutes after coming on, hitting a long-range strike towards the right corner that Wiese managed to punch clear.
Bale tried again in the 78th minute, but the flying left-back shot wide of the right post after choosing not to return Defoe's pass.
Spurs finally got their third goal after Bale's cross hit the bar and rebounded out to Lennon on the right flank.
The winger dummied his defender and advanced into the box before sending a low cross towards Crouch, whose tap-in finish was an easy task with Wiese caught out of position.
Harry Redknapp's team top Group A with ten points, level with Inter ahead of their last game of the group stage away to FC Twente. The Dutch team are third, trailing Inter by five points, while Bremen have only two so far.
