Despite Harry Redknapp's sacking at White Hart Lane earlier this month, the Eredivisie champions stopper has not ruled out a summer switch to the English Premier League outfit.
Ajax Amsterdam central defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has long been linked with a move away from the Eredivisie outfit to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
However, the Spurs are yet to reach an agreement over a transfer fee with the Eredivisie champions in order to lure the Belgian stopper away from Amsterdam Arena.
The highly-rated defender, who is regarded as one of the best central defenders playing in Europe, reportedly has his heart set on a move to White Hart Lane before the 2012/13 campaign kicks-off. The sacking of Lilywhites head
coach, Harry Redknapp, earlier this month, has not changed the 25-year-old’s mind of joining the English Premier League outfit this summer.
Vertonghen, who is a product of the Amsterdammers fabled youth academy, started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2006/07 season. The Belgian international made rapid developments to his game to become a regular
starter for the Amsterdam giants.
The talented defender, who has thus far donned the jersey of Ajax in well over 100 appearances and netted 23 goals along the way, has been performing consistently at the centre of defence for De Joden.
His impressive performances garnered him interest from several top flight European clubs including http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and Borussia Dortmund. However, the centre-back saw the Spurs as the ideal club for him.
Tottenham finished fourth on the English Premier League table in the 2011/12 season, but missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification due to Chelsea's triumph in the competition last season. Spurs have been in the market to
sign a quality defender to strengthen their back-line.
The North London side identified Vertonghen as a perfect addition to their squad, and tabled a bid of eight million Euros to acquire the highly-rated centre-back’s signature, whose contract at Amsterdam Arena runs until the summer
of 2013.
However, the Ajax management has made it clear that they will not let go of their prized asset for anything less than 15 million Euros.
Lilywhites then raised their offer by two million Euros, making a total of 10 million Euros for the transfer, but De Joden management are still not satisfied.
With negotiations still hanging in the air between the two clubs, it seems like Vertonghen will be making preparations for the new season with the Eredivisie champions.
