  1. Plug-in a usb mouse > download synaptics touch-pad driver.

  2. Try going to your computer manufacturer's website and reinstalling the driver for your touch pad.  On my old laptop and the laptop I'm on now, the driver was/is called "Synaptics Pointing Device," this can sometimes stop working and when it does you will more than likely lose some mouse features (such as the ability to use it).

  3. I suggest you take it in for repair

In the meantime get a usb powered mouse, it should work

  4. Take it in for repair.

  5. Try reinstalling the driver from the manufacturer's website. Its usually a synaptics touchpad driver required.

If this doesn't work, then the hardware is probably the cause. If this is the case, i advise you to get a small mouse rather than try to fix it as the cost may be prohibitive. You could perhaps shop around for replacement hardware though.
