Touchdown hit sustained by Tom Brady had New England Patriots’ owner scared – NFL News Update
New England Patriots’ owner, Robert Kraft, admitted being scared when his star quarterback, Tom Brady took a hit while plunging for a 1-yard touchdown against Baltimore Ravens in the final quarter of the game.
Kraft said that he “shuddered” at the moment ,thinking that Brady’s back was broken.
Brady took a shot from Ray Lewis as he went to score early in the fourth quarter of the game.
Brady though quickly assuaged his owner’s fears as he got up and celebrated the touchdown.
"It was scary but he popped right up." Kraft said after being relieved that Brady had not sustained any injury.
On camera and for Kraft who was watching the game from the owner’s box, it did appear to be a nasty hit when Lewis’ helmet hit Brady’s lower back. There were initial fears that Brady could suffer from significant injuries. With
the most important game still remaining, the incident was sure to raise fear in the Patriots.
"We all shuddered up in the box. We thought that his back might have been broken." Kraft said.
Brady who displayed a poor show overall in the game did not make his team slump as he went to score a touchdown with a dive in the final quarter of the game with eleven and a half minutes remaining. The touchdown helped the Patriots
take the lead before which they were trailing the Ravens by four points.
A missed field goal attempt by Billy Cundiff with just 11 seconds remaining ensured that the Patriots remained ahead of the Ravens.
Brady completed 22 of 36 passes for 239 yards and threw no touchdown passes while going for two interceptions. However, he made for his shortcomings by leading his team into the Super Bowl with his touchdown dive.
Such hits were bound to occur in an AFC championship game where both the sides were fighting desperately to ensure their chances of reaching the Super Bowl.
Wide receiver of the Patriots, Matthew Slater recognized the importance. Slater did not consider the hit taken by Brady to be “dirty”.
"That's the way the game should be played, physical. This game is not a noncontact sport. So there's going to be hits. We knew that going into the game with those guys. They play physical football.” Slater said.
Patriots’ safety, James Ihedigbo too pointed out that such hits are part of the game when teams are battling in an AFC Championship game.
“There's going to be those type of hits and it's all a part of the game.” Ihedigbo said.
The Patriots will now be facing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl event.
