Tough battle expected at ShopRite LPGA Classic, as the field features several big names
The ShopRite LPGA Classic is going to star from June 1-3, at the prestigious Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, New Jersey, with a formidable field featuring LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) and LET (Ladies European Tour) giants.
The tournament is expected to stage a tough battle among the previous winners and the ones who still seek to prove their mettle in the event.
The defending champion, Brittany Lincicome is looking to repeat the last-year performance in a bid to maintain her ascendency over her rivals.
Moreover, some of the other prominent past winners include Ai Miyazato, Seon Hwa Lee, Cristie Kerr and Angela Stanford.
On the other hand, the current world number one, Yani Tseng, is being considered the hot favourite for the coveted title, but other players cannot be ignored, especially LET titans like Laura Davies and Sophie Gustafson.
Analysts said that it is hard to predict who is going to win the tournament, but top-ranked LPGA stars such as Suzann Pettersen and Paula Creamer will want to stand to their ground.
They said that another contender, who can prove tough but is underrated, is Azahara Munoz of Spain. The Spanish prodigy stunned most of the top-ranked professional at the Sybase Match Play Championship, grabbing the title.
Although not as strong a contender as Tseng or Creamer, Munoz has what it takes to trouble big names on the course.
Yani Tseng is seeking to record her fourth victory of the season at New Jersey. She kicked off the season in an amazing style and won the Honda LPGA Thailand 2012 in February.
Then, in March, she racked up another LPGA title when she outrivaled Na Yeon Choi and Ai Miyazato by one stroke.
Tseng recorded her last victory of the current season at the Kia Classic, against Sun Young Yoo. She played a stunning game and grabbed a massive 6-stroke triumph.
The sport’s commentators said if the top-ranked prodigy holds her nerve in the tournament, she can win. Tseng recently spoke to the media about her plans for the ShopRite LPGA Classic, saying she is ready to take on her rivals.
The Taiwanese star could not live up to her fans’ expectations in the last event, Sybase Match Play Championship. However, she said that she is desperately seeking to take revenge for her last defeat.
