Tough conditions at La Sauzaie continue to trouble surfers during Round 2 of Protest Vendee Pro
The surfing fans kept getting treated to a heavy dose of exhilarating surfing action as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro continued with its Round 2 (Round of 96) heats at the main site of La Sauzaie in Bretignolles-sur-Mer, France, on Thursday, April 19.
Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin, Portugal’s Jose Ferreira, New Zealand’s Rowan Aish and France’s Bady Thomas managed to claim top honours in their respective Round 2 heats to advance through into the third round (Round of 64).
With clean four-to-five foot right and left-handers breaking at the primary event site on Thursday, the local and international surfers were expected to put on a series of exquisite performances as they sought to remain in contention for the coveted the ASP rating points.
Pitted against a handful of talented surfers in the ninth heat, Martin put on a relatively impressive performance to walk away with the win. His heat-total of 9.76 points met no significant challenge from his rivals despite being pretty modest. Alves also made his way through into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 8.73 points for the runner-up place.
France’s Paul Tesson and Venezuela’s Victor Coppolone failed to make the Round 3 cut after finishing with a heat-total of 4.73 and 2.94 points respectively.
The tenth heat featured yet another low-scoring contest as none of the four surfers had luck with the waves. Ferreira, however, managed to clinch victory with a heat-total of 10.00 points. Pastusiak was unable to challenge his rival’s score, but still managed to extend his life in the competition by securing runner-up place with a heat-total of 7.80 points.
Italy’s Alessandro Piu and Netherland’s Remi Petersen found themselves eliminated from the competition field after finishing with a heat-total of 6.70 and 5.24 points respectively.
Aish walked away with top honours in the 11th heat after finishing with a heat-total of 10.00 points. The modest two-wave total hardly seemed like a challenging one, but the demanding surfing conditions kept his rivals from outperforming him.
Palmarini secured runner-up place with a heat-total of 9.00 points to make his way through into the next round as well. Portugal’s Robertson Goncalves and Great Britain’s Tom Good failed to make much of an impact during the heat and eventually finished with a heat-total of 5.47 and 0.77 points respectively.
The 12th heat of Round 2 was won by Thomas as he managed to finish with a heat-total of 9.50 points. Reyes struggled to find his rhythm during the course of the heat, but still successfully extended his life in the event after scoring a heat-total of 4.83 points.
France’s Kevin Lestrade and Italy’s Armando Colucci got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 4.83 and 2.44 points respectively.
The intense surfing action continued at La Sauzaie with the remaining Round 2 heats of the ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro.
