In the TdF, the green jersey is the points classification jersey. Is the green jersey also called the sprinters jersey?

  1. The green jersey represents the sprinting points awarded to the rider with the most points. They get points by being first over the line at the end of some stages and at different sprint zones on the course. Thor Hushovd has the Green jersey now.

  2. If you watch the tour you know that!

    come on man........pay attention

  3. Yes, but not officially, just by commentators and the media.

  4. Joe's correct. Points are awarded for the first few riders to pass a certain point (either on the course (lower number of points) or at the finish (high number of points in decending order)- if on the course, it's usually the first 3 and at the finish, up to top 25 riders that get points). Riders typically 'sprint' to be the first one across the lines to earn these points. Riders in breakaways tend to gobble-up the points along the course and so you don't usually see these contested by the sprinters unless the points classification is close, but points are awarded none-the-less. In theory, a rider who is not a sprinter, could break-away on most stages, grab all the points and win the green jersey yet NOT be a sprinter.  But, since the points at the finish are so great, most teams chase down the escapees for the stage win and to get the most points for their sprinters and it's the 'sprinters' that claim the Green jersey.

  5. Yes but sprinters don't always win as you also get points on mountain stages (not as much) but I think around fifteen points as for example this year Thor Hushovd leads the green jeresy classification this year but has a rider seven points behind him who is a much better climber than him giving him the chance to win sprinter points on mountain stages where Thor has next to no chance
