  1. Southern Chile is the best thing I've seen in South America. I particularly dont like the north of Chile, never been to Atacama but dont fancy going there. Santiago is not a very nice city, quite cold in winter, extremely hot in summer and usually with smog. However, there are beautiful places in the south (and very cheap too!) like Pucon, Valdivia, Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Torres del Paine, Chiloe, Chillan. To me the best web page is actually Chile's tourism web page Turistel (www.turistel.cl)  where you can find hotels, restaurants, tips, etc.

  2. I was in Chile for only one week and visited both the North and the South - so you can definitely enjoy it all in one month!

I agree with the other posts that San Pedro de Atacama in the North is a must. I would also recommend a day trip to Bolivia (about 40Kms away) to visit the Green and White Lagoons. They are breathtaking and like nothing I'd ever seen before. I did a 1/2 day excursion and found it well worth it.

The south of Chile, especially the Patagonia region is extremely beautiful. I would recommend Torres del Paine, Punta Arenas (you have to see the "end of the world"!)

While in the south, I would also recommend a side trip to El Calafate in Argentina, which is an easy bus ride from Puerto Natales (where Torres del Paine is). The Perito Moreno Glaciers are impressive and a must see!

  3. San Pedro de Atacama in the north is absolutely, without question the hands down coolest place i have ever been. (ive been to over twenty countries) el tatio geysers is a good day trip. it is the driest desert in the world. someone told me if you die out in the desert, your body will never decompose because of a total absence of all living microorganisms, including the bacteria the break down dead things. weird.

i was not extremely impressed with Santiago. there was a lot of smog. didn't really go anywhere else in chile. argentina is awesome tho. but seriously, San Pedro is as cool as it gets. also don't know of too many websites. just Google it. that part is easy. one website i use when i travel is travelpod.com. it is online journals of actual travelers that have been to wherever you are looking. lots of good advice for off the beaten path places that the guidebooks miss.

  4. San Pedro de Atacama is nice, but don't expect it to be Machu Picchu. It is an old adobe town in the Atacama desert of Antofagasta. The best there is to visit the Tatio geyser or the Petroglyphs at Altos del Loa.

Another cool place os Valle Nevado, close to Santiago, but you are cutting it real close there as snow should be about melted by now.

Torres del Paine national park is amazing and definitelly a sight to be seen.

Finally, the region of the lakes and the island of Chiloé in the South are beautiful.
