Tournament in Memphis renamed to U.S National Indoor Tennis Championships – Tennis News
One of the elite tennis tournaments of the year has been renamed to something more attractive and appropriate for the new season that begins in January 2013. The Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour event which also incorporates
the Women Tennis Association draw in Memphis has been renamed to U.S National Indoor Tennis Championships.
Previously, the tournament was known as the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships or Memphis International. There might be a big conspiracy behind the decision shift but apparently it has been changed to make it in line with the
other tournaments that are played over the course of year.
The event is scheduled to begin under the tag of new names on February 16 and last until the 24th of the same month. It will take place at The Racquet Club of Memphis and most probably feature the likes of the defending
champions in both draws. Last year, the Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden clasp the titles in this year’s edition of the tournament. The tournament is both an Association of Tennis Professionals 500 level as well as the Women Tennis Association
500 points.
However, some of the big names has also been affiliated with the tournament in the past and won titles at Memphis. Some of them include the likes of the former world number one, Bjorn Borg; his fellow mates Jimmy Connors and John
McEnroe. Usually Americans has led the tournament with utmost dominance. The likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Andy Roddick are also the former champions. In the women category, the former world number one Maria Sharapova from Russia contested at Memphis
and won the tournament as well. Former world number one, Venus Williams, who recently won the doubles Gold Medal at London Olympics along with her sister Serena, has also won the title at Memphis.
It will be interesting to witness who will be crowned the champion with the new name tag of the tournament. It will be a memorable moment both for the player as well as the organizers who have done extremely well to lure some big
guns into the tournament to increase its viewership.
