  1. Don't do the tours.  I am telling you they are a waste of time.  When we went to the Colloseo we started a tour and ditched it.  You are in a large group, ready for pickpocketing, with headphones listening about way more than you probably wanted to know.  Once they started talking about a fossilized leaf in one of the bricks we were out.

The website was in Italian last I checked, but I couldn't find it today.  You don't need to do this tour, but we found it really useful.  It's city bus 110.  Last March it was 13 Euro a day and it hit all the major sites.  It was one of those double decker busses that you plug in earphones and listen to information about the city while you ride around.  You can get on and off the bus the whole day stopping at the sites you want to.  You get on the bus at the Termini, there will be a lot of other companies there trying to get you to purchase another tour, but after some research it wasn't worth it.  Each site you stop at has either reasonable audio tours or pamphlets with information in English.

I will tell you last March the US Dollar wasn't worth much, and we spent about $3K there and didn't shop other than at this great flea market.  I would highly suggest getting a book called "Let's Go Italy" or at least reading it at Borders and making notes on Rome alone.  They have a ton of information, money saving techniques, maps, bus & train routes, etc.   It was the most valuable thing we packed.  By the way if you are flying AirItalia, keep it in your carryon, who knows when your baggage is going to arrive.

  2. We've used Three Millennia Tours on more than one occasion and would do it again.  We set up private tours (only 4 of us), so the prices are based on what you want to do and the time frame.  They are flexible, but have some great ideas if you don't know exactly what you are looking for.  They also offer smaller group tours.  The owner is American.
