how old do you have to be or how many years with a full license in order to tow a trailer total weight under 3500kgs ?

my daughter wants to tow a small caravan behind her sj413, she is 21 and held full u.k driving license for 2 years.

  1. have a look at :-

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dri...

  2. Oddly enough there are no restrictions on age or experience for towing a trailer or caravan, If she has a full licence.  Maybe there should be though.

  3. no she is fine, there are some courses but the main thing she needs to know is

IF the van snakes (moving left to right while towing - you will feel this is car) DO NOT HIT THE BRAKES. either accelerate till it stops then just slow down by taking foot of gas until you back down to speed.

If you hit brakes it could jack knife.

  4. Thats fine but I suggest she books herself on a "Towing course" They last for one day and would really help her.

  5. Go to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dri...

for full details on the current law

  6. No age restriction but they are limited to 50mph on motorways and dual carriageways.

Also I recommend a lot of practise reversing as you can cause problems to other users if you get stuck and then may get a driving conviction for not considering other users.

Any trailer will drastically alter the handing characteristics of a vehicle (braking and acceleration in particular).

  7. Any age with a license will do, just be careful and I would not go pass 45 mph.
