Is it legal to tow a car which has no MOT / Tax / Insurance from one place to another using a normal car (using normal car as the towing car) ? or do I have to call a registered tow vehicle for the move?

  1. If you are towing the car to be scrapped or to a mot testing station then it should be ok, it might be better to get a loan of a trailer and put the car on the trailer.

  2. My car insurance covers anything that I tow behind my vehicles.

( that's Allstate in NC ) , and I'm pretty sure that plates and registration are not required for the towed vehicle. You should check with your local DMV office or web site to be sure.

  3. you can tow for short journeys on A roads but not motorways, you need a rigid straight bar not a rope, substantial journeys you will have to trailer or put it on a flatbed lorry... both the major car vehicle recovery company's AA and RAC use this method, would they tow on a rigid bar if it was illegal?

  4. Here in the UK you would need tradeplates on the towing vehicle to be legal.

  5. It's not legal.  Needs to be off the road, i.e on a flatbed or trailer.

  6. Of course it is legal - one can tow caravans, trailers etc so obviously you can tow a car.

If you wish to do this, you need a TOWING BAR not a rope.

  7. If a car has any of its four wheels on a public road, it must have tax, MOT and valid insurance.  That applies even if it is being towed.
