Toyota Supra Or Mitsubishi Eclipse?

Ok i'm looking to buy a car and i found both these cars at this carlot by my house and i got the money for both but just still debating.

1990 Toyota Supra Twin Cam Turbo, Standard - 5,995

3.0L 238hp

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, Automatic - 7,995

2.0L 210hp

Both cars are in really nice shape, But im not sure which to buy, I want a standard really bad, there the only thing ive pretty much ever driven and will be, so thats why im going more torwards the supra, But the eclipse is in super nice condition and ive always liked them, But then again i dont know anything about eclipse?

Can anyone inform me on the downfalls and uprises on both cars? And like which is easier to upgrade in the performance criterea.

And or even which is the best buy, Money is not a problem at the moment.

  1. ugh! i wish there were some other reason, but i think your best bet would be the supra because its stick shift

although the supra is the 1st gen, it still beats out the eclipse because automatics just aren't as good for tuning

if you don't know much about the eclipse just look online for info

ok so the supra is good because it is RWD, has quite a lot of potential, and already has a beefy engine

the eclipse i believe has AWD (which is not as fun as RWD) and is newer? srry i don't know that much about the eclipse either because its not as serious a tuner car as the supra

in terms of appearance i guess the eclipse looks better...

but anyway the supra would be the better buy

edit: to elgrande, yes a '97 supra with twin turbo could sell for 17 grand but not a '90

there is a huge difference between 1st and 2nd gen supra, if we were talking about a '97 then there would be no question about it over the eclipse

  2. The supra will be easier to mod and gain huge hp numbers.  where as the gsx has transmission issue (no matter auto or standard)  The biggest issue with a MKIII supra is that d**n headgasket.  Change that with a metal one and some arp headbolts.  Then start upgrades.  The motor is a strong base with huge exhaust ports (bigger than the newer supras)   Which will help with the turbocharger...  I have listed my favorite sites...  Give me a ring if you need help

  3. ummmmmmmmm

    actually

what you just asked was the stupidest thing i've ever heard

    1. eclipses are for idiots who drive like idiots

    2. supras are rare especially MKIII's

    3. ^^ that means it has equity

    4. ^^ that means your car could be worth something

    5. eclipse's are like candy you should never pay more than pocket change for one

    6. you cannot compare the HP or speed........ supras are light as F++k and stock they can do 130 mph +......... without turbo...

    7. you cannot kill an Inline 6 = 7mgte........ that means you'll be driving it forever

    8. if your planning on racing you can never outrun a cop with an eclipse......

    9. eclipse has no sport top... and those are just bad asss

    10. buy that supra or you will regret it.....  eclipse 4g63 engines are quick  but they also break down under hard conditions......

    11. quit kidding yourself gas is expensive and my supra gets 23 hwy ouch..... but i will never buy an new car i will have this car 30 yrs from now and it will still be running strong.........

performance parts are just as cheap for supras as they are for eclipses..... but eclipses arent made for racing......

supra is plain and simple a race car..... drive it hard..... it will not sh+t on you

    http://www.jscspeed.com/mk3/mk3.htm

listen to me buy the f++king supra you dumbsh+t

    its no contest

  4. go with the supra.... 7m-gte all the way baby

i own that cars life partner (1990 cressida) but with a supra engine and its one of the greatest things ever to happen to me, super fun to drive, i cant immagin what the turbo feels like ;)

  5. Supra, every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I can't believe anyone is asking $7995 for a 1995 Eclipse. Dealer book value on that thing is maybe $1200 (I assumed low miles and "good" condition). I'm sure anyone else on here (regulars) who know cars will look at that $7995 asking price and go, "Huh? for a 13-yr old Eclipse?"

Supras have always been in high demand (I know of one for sale near my house, a '97 twin-turbo, that had a bid of $17,000 on it last I checked with the owner). Eclipses can never make that claim. Plus, when you get ready to sell the Supra (if ever), you'll have a buyer, and they'll give you top-dollar for it.

    Supra. Easy answer.

**EDIT** -- Minesbnr - My point on the '97 Supra selling for $17K was this: Here is a car that is 11 years old, and is commanding half of what it originally sold for. There are only a few cars on the market (outside of exotics) that can make that claim. I was NOT comparing it to a '90.

  6. What ever you believe is right for you. Who are we to judge which car some one else is to buy. We buy a car according to our comfort. We don't know your comfort so we cannot decide. ALTHOUGH I WILL GIVE YOU SOME TIPS: MAKE SURE THE CAR HAS VERY GOOD MILEAGE I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE CAR'S MILEAGE BUT I WOULD SAY BETWEEN 24-35 MPG. MAKE SURE NOT DENTS OR BUMPS ARE ON THE CAR, BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY TO FIX THEM. CHOOSE THE CAR YOU THINK HAS A GOOD STYLE. EVERYTHING SHOULD BE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. NOTHING SHOULD BE OUT OF PLACE. HOPE THIS HELPS

  7. #1 Toyota is most reliable and easier to work on than a Mitsubishi,  and the  cost of Mitsubishi parts and labor would cost you more overall. Call the dealerships on each car and ask for a part (tail light or water pump) on each car and see for yourself how much only a part would cost. Take it from there, get deeper into the engine and you will find which would cost more.   But from experience  Toyota has served me well since 1975, have owned a few, only to upgrade. Could not imagine doing so with a Mitz.!!!

  8. From the reviews I've heard I wouldn't even be considering a Mitsubishi.  Check out some reviews online.  Do a search.  Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans = best.
