I'm trying to decide between these three cars. The corolla is used with 25k miles selling for $13,600 from Hertz. The yaris is inexpensive with great gas mileage. I don't know if I should just buy a new car, or buy the used corolla, which is the cheapest. Ugh.

  1. I don't know a lot about the Sentra, but among the other three;

    The Fit gets the highway mileage of a small V6 and is frantic at highway speeds. It's due for replacement by a new model for 2009 and selling to a waiting list- you'll be paying full whack for a car that'll be "obsolete" by fall. Still, it's the best choice if you do a lot of hauling people and stuff around town, and can't wait until fall for the new model (but can wait 3-6 weeks for delivery of a 2008).

    The Yaris hatchback should cost new about what the Hertz Corolla does used; it's not as nice inside but not as bad as the press (which has consistently compared it to pricier cars), and gets 40 mpg in mixed driving once broken in.

    Best choice for around town/rural two-lanes without a lot of passengers or cargo hauling.

    Stay away from the ex-Hertz car but if you drive a lot of highway miles, look for an ex-private-owner 9th generation Corolla with a manual transmission.

  2. sentra.

  3. The Toyota Yaris has among the lowest customer satisfaction ratings (according to Consumer Reports) of any car sold in the USA. I would not consider it if I were you.

  4. don't buy a used rental car, I don't care if it was well maintained, it's been driven hard by ppl that didn't care how they treated it.

    don't buy a Toyota Yaris.

    the engine is noisy and unrefined, it has bad brakes and a poor unstable Hwy ride. you might get over the center mounted gauges but the terrible ride over 50 mph won't go away.

    look at the Honda Fit

    it's 10 times better.

    the only fault with the sentra is it fishtails or has a tendency to

    loose traction at the rear end when driven aggressively.

    for $15, 800 the Honda Fit comes standard with all power accessories, side curtain air bags and ABS brakes.
