Well in my experience teaching preschool, we don't use dot to dot letters as seen in many of the schools.  Children tend to have difficulty connecting those dots to make letters that they are just learning.  We write the child's name in Capital Letters in yellow or a light easy to trace over marker (highlighters work wonders) and allow them to trace that.  This way they see the letters as a whole and not just various dots on a page.  They see the beginning and ending points and know where they should have their writing instrument.  Always start with Capital letters first, they are the easiest and most developmentally appropriate letters to start with when teaching a new writer.

Punk mom is not wrong as a nursery nurse we used to write a child's name in yellow pen and encourage a child to write over their name. Before teaching your child in this way check with the school in what style they will be taught as bad habits learnt now eg teaching to write in capitals or with flicks is hard to break.,
