Question:

Tracing relatives?

My mother was adopted as a baby and I was wondering how I could track down her real parents. We know her original name but nothing besides that. How would we find the family? Also, seeing as there seems to be almost 100's of different families with the same last name, would it even be possible?

  3. *****First of all, do you know where she was adopted?  Start in that area, and depending on the state she was born in check the birth records, starting with the last name and the date.  You'll probably have to go to a courthouse, but if it was in California, for one state, they are on ancestry.com.  Be aware, though, adoption records are generally not open records.  You'll have to find a birth record, and then her name may be already changed.

Once you can locate where she was born, start with the phone books and/or city directories for the name.  Her birth mother may have been single when she was born and is now married, however, but perhaps somebody you contact may know of her and where she is today.

    Good luck with your search.
