I am looking to run track, and am not sure what spikes to buy. I can only afford one pair, but coach has asked me to run track and cross country. Would it be better to buy track shoes for distance, or distance for track?

  1. I believe there are some racing flats for cross country but they do have removable spikes to them. I think they can work for both sports.

  2. You should buy running shoes for track not spikes, spikes are only for cross country.

  3. Good luck with your training.

Actually, this question is straight forward if you break it down logically.

You stated that you can only buy one pair; track or distance.

Let's look at distance shoes first:  It is possible to run track in distance shoes safely.  In reality, you could run track in dress shoes if you had to.  Of course, that would be crazy, but hopefully you get my point.  That is, you can cover the shorter track distances with almost any type of shoe.

Now distance shoes: Distance is a different game.  You are on your feet longer, both in training and in the actual event.  If you try to cover that ground with only track shoes you are 1) going to get injured and 2) have feet that are so uncomfortable that you will not be able to train correctly.

So, no question about it.  Get distance shoe that match your running style and feet.  Don't just assume that a more expensive model is better.  I would recommend going to a local running store; not a Foot Locker, etc., but a real running store.   The sales people at the good running stores are usually long time runners that can analyze your running style and goals and suggest the best shoe for you.

Best of luck and stay running!!!  It is a hobby that is fun and the exercise will keep you young.

I hope my answer was helpful.

  4. get a pair of spikes but get one set of small sized spikes (track) and one set of long spikes (for X country).

  5. Buy some middle distance spikes with a good heel so that it can absorb some on the shock when your run track and long distance. Don't buy two pairs it's just a waste of money. If you really don't want to buy middle distance spikes then think about which event your better at and ask to only do that. I've been asked to do 100m - 1500m and cross country in trainers so you just need some cheap ones to start off with unless you've stopped growing then buy some decent spikes with about a thumbs width between your big toe and the front of the shoe. I would recommend some Asics or Nike because they are a very good brand for spikes.

Also don't listen to people saying that you should buy trainers for track because they know because spikes give more grip on track because they sink in to the track. (I wasn't trying to say buy trainers.)

  6. distance for track will not work distance will be to bulky for track try track for distance it may be more comfortable for you in the long run.
