Track Question.?

I just completed my freshman year in track.

800m.- 2:25

1600m.- 5:27

I try my very hardest everytime I compete and was very happy with myself this season.

However, people keep on telling me girl runners often get worse as their running carrers progress.

I'm 5'1 and not growing. But I really hope there is not much truth to this. What do you think?

  1. those are pretty good times so I would keep trying your best and if you truly practice hard you might not get worse.

  2. No, girl's do not get worse as their careers progress.  However, girls and boys progress differently.  Girls mature physically earlier than boys.  That's why there are a lot of really fast 12 and 13 year old girls.  However, after 14 whether a girl gets faster depends on her motivation and the coaching she receives.  A lot of high school coaches quite frankly aren't that good.  On the other hand, boys continue to mature physically until their senior year.  As a result, boys improve because they are still growing and often in spite of poor training or poor coaching.  What girls experience in 10th grade is what boys experience their senior year or first year in college. If you are motivated and you have a good coach or read up so that you can self coach then you will continue to improve.

Don't worry about your height.  Check out the height of some of the best women runners in the world such as Meserat Defar.  http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/athlete=171...

    She's also 5' 1" and run's 2 miles in 8:58.

  3. i havent ever heard that, but from what i notice i'd say if you just stay in shape you'll be just fine

  4. It is kind of true. It sucks.

  5. as long as you stay commited to running and still love running your times will improve.  there was this one girl at our school that was kinda short and she was like the best in the state and she improved every year.

  6. Chances are, you will get better if you practice. People will get lazy and people will fail. People are probably talking about lazy people's running. If you stay the same at running, and never try to improve, yeah, hardworking people will pass you up. But you seem like a great runner, and a hard worker. Good job on the times also. I got a 5:44 in the 1600m this year too. (7th grade)

  7. thats totally false

ive been doing track for 3 1/2 yrs now and i use to be 5'0 and know im 5'5 so it just completly depends on your genes sweetie.

  8. ahhhh i am scared for the same thinggg! I ran about the same as you 2:22 and 5:29. I have hear that this can be true but the older girls on the team that are faster then me are slowly improving. It is not like freshman year when you PR in every race but at least it gives me some hope!! I know some girls get slower after they hit puberty so...
