  3. Alright. So you want to know about track. Well first, Track is divided up into three catagories. Sprints, Distance, and Field events.

Lets start with sprints. these races are for people who can run really fast (hence the word sprint) for a short period of time. the sprint races are 100 meter dash (1/4 of the track, this is also the shortest race). 200 meter dash (1/2 of the track) 400 meter run (1 lap around the track) and 100 meter hurdles ( the short sprint while jumping over, well, hurdles)

then theres distance. these races include the 800 meter run (2 times around the track: 1/2 a mile) the 1600 meter run ( 4 times around the track: 1 mile) and if you are in high school the 3200 meter run (8 times around the track: 2 miles)

both the sprints and distance have open races, which is just you and other runners doing the race against eachother. but most of these events are also in relays, where you and 3 other of your teammates take turns running the race. lets take the 200 meter dash for example. if your first, you do the 200 meters and then pass of the baton to your teammate, then he/she runs the 200 meters and passes on to the next teammate and so on until all 4 teammates come across the finish line.

well thats really all of track events summerized into a couple paragraphs, but there is also field events.

the field events dont really involve any running. the events are long jump (who can jump the farthest), high jump (who can jump the, well, highest), shot put (who can toss a small 5 or 7 pound metal cannonball the farthest), discus (who can toss a heavy metal frisbee the farthest) and if your in high school, pole vault( where a person uses a long, flexible pole as an aid to leap over a bar, similar to the high jump, but at much greater heights.)

well, thats about all i can think of right now about track and field. these are only the main events, if your in high school there are a couple more events. I hoped this helped, but if you have anymore questions, just ask your coaches, that is why they are there.
