Cell phones show incoming calls on the phonebill, but landlines do not. Will AT&T trace an incoming call to my line? Will the police need a warrant?

  1. you can get caller id on land lines. you need a phone that displays numbers and the service from your phone company, even this will not show hide caller id numbers, if you are getting nuisance calls your phone company has to take action if you request it.

  2. caller id shows numbers.. and there are reverse phone listing sites (no, they won't have all numbers, ie unlisted, or cell phones).  If you have caller id AND an answering machine (with tape, preferably), then you can screen calls and return only those which you want to.  No.. the phone co will not trace it. If it has reason to be harassing or such, you have to file a report with the police, who are authorized to do the tracing. Cell phones are hard.. since not always registered.

Numbers that are 800 or 866 can be telemarketing or bill collectors. Sometimes you can trace that by putting the whole number in google WITH QUOTATION MARKS, and it may show up that way.

  3. You can contact ATT directly and discuss your options.  They have a couple of options if it involves harassment.  I am assuming you have caller ID and the number you are trying to trace is not showing up because it is blocked.  Telephone records are a very delicate situation and there are a number of federal laws involved.  Please feel free to contact me and I can discuss all of your options and regulations involved in tracking down the source.

  4. Yes they not only need a warrant but a judges order or you can sue for a coupla Million $$$

  5. Yes, the phone company has the capability to trace phone calls made to your land-line. You can also register ("trace") the number of any incoming call by touching *57 immediately after the call, which saves the incoming number for the phone company to give to the police, for a fee, but often only works for local callers.

No, absolutely no warrant is necessary for obtaining the number of a phone that called you, as you are a party to the call. A warrant is only necessary if the police want to obtain a wiretap WITHOUT you knowing about it.
