Question:

Tractor repair. The diesel tank will only fill half way and burns more fuel than it should.

On my tractor the manual says it hold 46 U.S. gallons ,but it will only half as much as it should now. It used to fill all the way up before. i dont know whats wrong. What can i do to fix it!!!!

  1. Are you sure the gauge and the sender are working properly?

    A lot of the times the sender float gets stuck or the connection is bad.

    Another problem may be the regulator supplying power to the gauges - Wrong voltage= wrong reading.  Happens a lot with old Land Rovers that I'm used to.

    Burning more fuel?

    This is probably down to worn injectors, or possibly a timing problem. If you can pull the injectors and get them tested, it is possible to have them refurbished for less than new ones. You can sometimes pick them up from farm auctions in with a lot of spares - just watch when someone is selling the same model as yours - they may negotiate for spares they have lying around.


  2. The tank has to be empty for you to be able to put the full amount of fuel into it.

    if you are going by the fuel gage it could be stuck, and not working, so is only half empty when it read empty.

    Or the breather tube to the tank could be plugged and causing pressure back up causing the pump to shut off prematurely.
