Veteran guard could become a good addition to the roster to mentor and back up 2012 number two draft pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
There was a time in the NBA when Tracy McGrady was one of the most exciting players in the NBA, and the one who used to draw the most crowds. McGrady had the best years of his NBA career with the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets,
and averaged over 20 points a game for 8 consecutive seasons. He was one of the most successful players in the NBA at that. However, injuries have since affected McGrady’s play and status in the league, to the point that he is now considered as a veteran guard
to fill up the bench and mentor the young kids.
McGrady played for the Atlanta Hawks last season, and did not start a single game. He averaged 5.3 points and 3 rebounds per game while managing 16.1 minutes of playing time. The year before that, he was with the Detroit Pistons
where he played 72 games out of which he started in 39. Averaging 23.4 minutes per game, McGrady finished the season with an average of 8 points and 3.5 rebounds. And he may be moving to his third team in three NBA seasons.
Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer has recently reported that McGrady might be working out for the Bobcats in the hopes of finding a spot on the team.
“I hear Tracy McGrady might work out with the #Bobcats some, similar to how Josh Howard did. All informal and exploratory,” reported Bonnell.
McGrady is still a respected player in the league but his value has diminished in the past few years and now, people only look at him as someone who can be a back up for their primary guards. And in Charlotte, this year’s number
two draft pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will be getting the bulk of the minutes at the wing. However, McGrady will be a good addition to the team to fill up for him when he rests, and also to groom and mentor the rookie into the superstar he has the potential
to become.
McGrady will find a role for himself on some team eventually, as he still holds that value in the NBA. However, his twenty point scoring days in the league are long gone.
