Will T-Mac’s arrival in the Big Apple good for the New York Knicks or not? J.R. Smith thinks it would be fantastic....
The New York Knicks have been trying to get back into title contention for the past few years and in order to achieve that feat they are mustering all kind of help.
One of the main reasons for the lack of success at the Big Apple franchise, in the last two years particularly, has been the teams’ inability to play together as a unit. They seem more intent in applying an offensive system which
is designed for their star players to perform isolation plays.
With the arrival of Mike Woodson as the head coach though, the philosophy seems to have changed and now the focus is on developing a strong team around the superstars, much like the model of Miami Heat.
The Knicks managed to pick up Jason Kidd during the off-season along with all his experience to bring a veteran presence on the roster. Although they lost out on Jeremy Lin, the franchise bolstered the one guard position by the
acquisition of Raymond Felton. The front court also saw some depth by the addition of veteran Marcus Camby.
The Knicks have apparently developed enough assets to compete in the top heavy East, but with one of the more known names still available in the free agency, in Tracy McGrady, the club seems interested. McGrady is no longer the
shooter he used to be in his hey days, but can add a whole new dimension to the Knicks bench. The player has been working out with various teams in search of a contract, but has so far not decided on anything.
Whether or not, McGrady could be a fit with the Knicks that still remains to be found out. But when The New York Post met up with Knicks reserve J.R. Smith on Monday and asked him about whether T-Mac could fit in well, he promptly
gave a nod of approval.
“Definitely,” Smith said “T-Mac has always been an elite player in this league. We need all the help we can get in every area. … So whenever a big name comes up that can help our team, we’ve got to get him.”
The chances of McGrady fitting into the Knicks system are certainly bright as he spent a brief span with the franchise at the end of 2009-10 campaign. He can be an ideal player to back up Smith at the shooting guard position, especially
till the time Iman Shumpert recovers from his ACL tear.
Another factor which looks promising for the 15 year veteran is that he can make his own plays, something the Knicks would need to stretch the court for the likes of Anthony and Stoudemire.
