How old do you have to be to work at Trader Joes?

Also, if you work there, is it fun? How much do they pay a new employee?

I only really need the answer to the first question, thanks!

  1. I am in California, so it could vary from state to state, but i believe you need to be at least 16 years old to work at Trader Joe's because of higher regulations. I think I started working there at age 17, and simply needed to provide them with a work permit from my high school. You can get a definitive answer by just going in and asking any of the managers, or you can fill out the application anyway and it should have a box asking if you are at least 16 or 18 years of age.

In Cali, they started you out at $9.00/hour as of early 2007... it could have changed since then. You get evaluations from the managers every 3 months, accompanied by a minimum of a 25 cent raise. The better your performance, the more the raise. The shifts are 8 hours, unless you specify otherwise... but sometimes when you work shorter shifts you get worse duties around the store.

I would say Trader Joe's is a pretty fun place to work. I would say the downfall was the number of managers... there were at least 3 or 4 on duty all the time at my store which got confusing. Most of them were really nice and alot of fun, but one made me cry. Also, there are a lot of employees on at a time which can make it hard to keep busy, and therefore harder to look good in front of the managers. Some people are working at Trader Joe's in hopes of making a career out of it, while some are just there as a part time gig. So there is a diverse group of people there as far as age and interest goes. Oh! And the closing crew at my store would play games some nights when the store was empty. Anyway, yeah it is a pretty good place to work.
