Trading Standards?

Must cost a fortune to keep it going. In my experience this dept is a total waste of money and not worth wasting time with! Does anyone know what they can actually do to help consumers?

  1. In Scotland Trading Standards, as well as helping consumers sort their prolems out with faulty equipment, bad trading etc, they are into debt management.

They helped a friend of mine who had got herself into a lot of debt and it spiralled out of control. they worked out for her how much she could afford to pay, and gave her a lot of good friendly advice. Her problem was sorted and four years later she is now out of debt.

It's all free unlike most debt management companies.

  2. What are you looking to trade them for?

If you are finding it a waste of time it's probably because you're asking too much.

    Try lowering the price.

Also it helps if you know of someone that needs a pair of standards.

  3. hear hear, I agree with you. I got them involved over a faulty laptop and neither the store or the manufacturers would take responsibility for the fault. So I got them involved and I'm still stuck with the laptop, there advise was to take it to an independant guy, for a report on it, which I did and I paid  him to fix it, as trading standards said I would be facing court costs for a laptop that was still in guarantee. They were of no use whatsoever.

  4. I have had some advice from trading stanards over an issue.

The information provided helped to resolve the situation without having to consider going to court.

There are some areas where they cannot really get involved, but as a source of information about your 'rights' on purchases and knowledge about likely outcomes and alternatives have personally found them to be helpful.

  5. Yes the clue is in the title.Trading Standards.

We have a law in this country that protects consumers from being ripped off on products bought.

If you buy say for an example a car that has been in an accident and been repaired yet the dealer had not disclosed this information to you when you bought it, then you can contact trading standards whom will investigate and have the power to close that dealer down if found to be knowingly selling damaged cars. You will also be entitled to a full refund of your money. because you were sold something that was not as advertised.

Thats just one example the list is endless.

  6. As the chief trading standards officer for everywhere and anywhere I find your question both impertinent and disrespectful.

Have you the remotest idea of the responsibility involved in ensuring that the fact that we are completely and utterly useless is not allowed to detract from our goal of living on the gravy train for as long as possible.

As for that woman and her laptop, why doesn't she stop whinging and earn extra cash as a lapdancer to buy a new one.

(As a matter of fact the NHS has a few hundred they'd like to get rid of.)

    There you are problem solved!

    Next please!
