  3. onion soup-the problem is the real one is "baked"on clay individual plates in the oven.you serve soup in the dish and then place a a slice of toast-very thick bakery bread not the normal sliced kind .. and one of gruyère cheese and let cheese melt.

    crepes-chicken with a creamy sauce

baguette with cheese and ham and butter.that is all...no mayo no lettuce....

beef dijon:chunks of beef in a creamy dijon mustard sauce

dessert any really beautifully decorated cake.

  4. In Provence, they make a sort of pizza called a pissaladiere, which is like a foccacia with grilled onions, cheese (emmental), anchovies, nicoise olives (tiny, very tasty olives), a drizzle of olive oil, and herbes de provence. Sometimes they will also add fresh ham.... A VERY French dish from the Riviera. In the same region, they are famous for ratatouille, which is essentially a topping of aubergines, zucchini, capers, tomato, onion, and olives that is stewed and eaten with crepes or toasted french bread.

You could make Bouillabaise, a French seafood stew with fish, tomato, and shellfish.

A traditional serving of escargots is also very easy to make, loaded with butter and garlic. They need to be served hot.

Not sure of your age, but if you can serve alcohol, a wine / cheese tasting would be very informative, particularly since there are hundreds of varieties of both wine and cheese available and each influences the taste of the other. If wine is not possible, then the French will often eat cheese as a dessert course, with nuts and dried fruits and good bread. It is easy to make a large, pretty platter up with 5 or 6 varieties of cheese for a group of people.

There are also hundreds of types of pate and sausages made in France, many available in the States. The term is Charcuterie... You could make a nice platter of sausages and pates up... very pretty and easy to do.

The French LOVE coffee, and there is a definite coffee culture there, with very specific brews. A pot of French coffee with some pastries is also possible and easy. Go to Starbucks or Gloria Jeans and get the French specialty coffees, serve with good French chocolates and some little pastries or biscuits, such as madeleines.

Quiche is also a French dish, and, again, there are hundreds of varieties, from hams to mushrooms to fruit. Easy to make, store, and serve on a platter.

One helpful hint... If you have a decent library in town, there is a French cooking encyclopedia, a cooking Bible of sorts, called Larousse Gastronomique. At over 1,000 pages, virtually every French food is listed, along with a recipe. It is an expensive book to buy (around $80), but, I can guarantee that every chef in France owns a copy. It will demystify French food for you.

  5. ham&cheese on croissants,  pain au chocolat and chocolate log!

  6. bread and cheese, croissants, baguette
