africa was very tribal.  colonial powers carved their empires based on rivers, land etc and not on ethnic boundaries.  this created lots of problems after independence.  they introduced western ideals not suitable for local traditions.  tribal leaders were excluded fr political process.  they chose the western educated elites to govern after independence.

nkrumah excluded tribal leaders from politics.  this angered them and hence road to socio-economic development was hindered.

edward mutesa quarelled with british governor on form of government and was exiled to uk.

traditional forms of democracy, autocracy, monarchy, and oligarchy in state-organized societies as well as stateless societies in  pre-colonial history. african traditional political systems functioned because it fulfilled the needs in each community and not because of the political  forms.  indigenous methods of village cooperation with innovative forms of government, combining the power of universal rights with the uniqueness of each district's or nation's own customs and respected traditions.

rwanda, burundi, congo and lately kenya were all based on tribal politics. CAR/chad is now in trouble too 'cos of tribes.   africa will continue like this till traditional system of tribes is given due recognition
