Most female names mentioned there are associated with the blue rinse brigade so it's hardly surprising that the are not used anymore.

If you had a daughter or son what would you call them?

Your thoughts please.

  1. its nice to keep a family name in the family

some names are too weird and its unfair to the child

  2. Not only names - but most things traditional seem to be dying out.

People, particularly young ones, want to follow fashion these days.

    It's pathetic !

I suppose it shows a general inability to think things out for yourself.

  3. If my son turned out to be a girl her name was going to be Grace or Faye

    not chavvy at all eh!

oh and my little boys name is Reece (even though I wanted Morgan!)

    thanks Suki :)

  4. I called my car Norman

If I had a girl i would call her G Unit

A boy would be Harry Barry

    Oh......I already did that :)

  5. I just pray please God don't let me become old in a society which despises elderly people so much.

    Btw, lovely names Mrs GC.

I wasn't having a go at you AZ - just venting my thoughts on society in general.

  6. A miracle!

I'm WAY past the age of being able to have children.

I like the boys name Barney, and Lucy for a girl.

  7. daughter:Sandee

    son:Enrique

  8. LOL @ Steph, she has the most normally named kids in the world really.

Well, I have two boys: Finley Eric, and Caleb Stuart. Both of them were very nearly called their middle names. Eric was my Grandad, and Stuart is the boys' Godfather. They're both pretty traditional I think.

If I had a girl, she was going to be Evelyn Rose, also pretty old....lol.

My cousins are called Patrick John and Thomas William. We obviously have a thing for the old names in the family!!

I can see what you mean, some of those older names just aren't appropriate any more, and some are not exactly pretty. Like Gertrude, it's a shame, but life moves on, and names will too.

  9. My two are Phoebe Eliza and Leo Charles. Old biddies are constantly telling me that was their gran/grandad's name...Don't care we like them!

The new baby in our road is called Tabitha...eek.

  10. my next son will be called

Norman Walter Percy Harold Ernest Herbert

    Clifford & middle name Mohammad.

as I really wouldn't want him to be left out of the Winterval celebrations.

    sarcasm intended

    I know...........................

I've got my silly head on today.

    ;-)

  11. not so.

  12. I like old fashioned names, but not ugly ones.  And Gertrude (with all due respect) is, to my mind, an ugly name.

My daughters are named Joanna and Georgina.  Old fashioned, but pretty, classic names.  And they have meanings to them, which is important to me.

  13. Excuse me! Less of the blue rinse brigade stuff! lol!

My step sisters daughter is called Ruby, I saw that name mentioned in the article. I really don't know what name(s) I would like for my children.

  14. If I was to have a child, I would chose Patrick for a boy and Sophia for a girl.

This is all hypothetical as I am a Grandma and don't get a smell in when it comes to naming any new members of the family.  LOL

I saw an invitation to a birthday party sent to my grandson.  It was a joint party for Archie and Minnie???  No thanks.

Some names nowadays seem more unlikely than ever.

    Edit,

I was informed by my daughter that Archie and Minnie are 'posh' names.  Well I once knew a Minnie who had a chip shop and Archie was the name of the local rag and bone man.  How times change!!!!!!

  15. Many of the declining names are of German origin.  This must be a reflection of the germanic heritage of our royal family.

Now consumerism is the main influence hence the Porches and Mercedes off the world.

  16. A family of five boys in our village have names like Norman, Gordon and Cecil, all are under 10 years old. When their last child was born they decided to break with tradition and call him Elvis, I just hope the poor kid can fight!

  17. I have two sons who have fairly innocuous names, I can understand some of the names being discarded as they are not very pretty or inspiring I went to school with a girl called f***y that might have been ok in the 40's but she had a terrible time of it in the late 60's as you can well imagine

  18. I have all boys in their twenties and their names are still popular now.If I'd had a girl I would have liked Marilyn or Genevieve.

  19. My son's name is George Richard, which is very traditional. My daughter's name is less so - Charley Ann. I really wanted to call her Emma though, but that is my slightly nutty sister-in-law's name so I didn't use it. I like a lot of old traditional names, but many of the ones mentioned in that article aren't really the nicest of names!

  20. Daughter - Jasmine

Son - Abdul-Baqi - Servant of the Everlasting

    You never know.

  21. I would gladly name a child Gertrude before I would name her some of these hooked on phonics names you hear, can't spell and the child can't pronounce. I always liked Elspeth.

  22. Ruth for a daughter and Stephan for a son.

  23. For a girl I'd call her Iris. No one really has that name, I only know one Iris. Or maybe Evan. Even if the name is overused, I've always like Kathyrn. (This spelling too)

For a boy, I'd name him Aaron, Ethan or Michael. They're all pretty popular names, but I think they sound very nice. As long as they don't sound girly, and don't rhyme with any naughty words.

  24. I think it's a great shame that people are turning their backs on traditional names, and people forget as well, that their new born baby will hopefully be a 82 year old man or woman someday, how does an 82 year old pensioner called Cooper Smith or Pebbles McCafferty sound? Stupid!! But I really have heard of babies with these absurd names, and you just wonder what these boys and girls will think of their names, especially the outlandish ones that their celebrity driven parents pick, when they're older!  But to answer your question, if I became a daddy, I've always had this idea of naming him or her after me and my wifes grandparents, a first and middle name, something like Helen Louise, or James Albert, but thats just me, I'm a traditionalist, not blinded by celebrity!

  25. Is Kerry a name for the blue rinse brigade? What's wrong with blue hair? lol

My son is Antony, my daughter is Danielle.

I knew someone my age called Ethel, I thought that was strange.

@ kat, the two new babies in our family are called Patrick and Thomas.
