  1. You pay the fine and if you pay extra to go to traffic school, it gets reduced to a non-moving violation like a parking ticket.

  2. It's a moving violation.

    1.  Good driving record - discharge to small fine.

    2.  Bad driving record - large fine, probation, or suspension.

  3. traffic school will most likely get that point off your record.

  4. Something like driving 70 thru a school zone.

  5. Each state is different.  In my state it is theoretically possible to get six months in jail for a traffic offense.  Never happens, but it is possible.

  6. It's a petty offense - punishable by fine only - the fine depends on your laws and courts.

  7. The worst case scenario would depend on many dynamics in any court.  It's not solely based on your infraction or charge.

Since you're asking what the worst case scenario is, let me paint one for you:

You walk into court late, they've called your name, and you're somewhere else.  Then you have to sit for hours, until they ask who's name wasn't called.  Then you have to undergo the embarrassment of standing there in some cattle call line waiting to talk to the prosecutor who at this point has already dealt with 25 - 65 people with all the same excuses and worries.   So you're not off to a great start, but when the prosecutor or judge (if applicable, or magistrate usually for stuff like this) asks you questions you're babbling on about how you don't think you deserved it and manage to annoy the judge who makes an example out of you.  It could just get worse from there.   But that's not all!   Since you're surrounded by offenders, one of them takes your wallet, and now you find no money to pay for parking, or if you have meters, your meter is expired and you have a new ticket, which you plead NOT GUILTY to, and this whole thing starts over.

The retired officer above covered the rest.
