Question:

Traffic Jam - Driving on the shoulder?

So there was an accident on a major highway today, all lanes blocked. I got on, realized the accident, and tried to get off at the next exit. I had problems though... Lots of people were getting onto the shoulder, I would guess to get off at the next exit. The problem with this, however, is that if an ambulance or firetruck needed to get by, they couldnt. Traffic was stopped in the right lane, and stopped on the shoulder. That being said, I waited until the exit-lane began until I tried to merge... but no one would let me in. I eventually just stuck my nose in, either forcing the guy to brake, or hit me... VERY aggressive I know, but at the time I was angry that these same guys not letting me in, are the same guys blocking emergency vehicles.

Anyway... right or wrong? Driving on the shoulder to get off a crowded highway? How would you feel if someone like me tried to shove infront at the exit lane when you were on the shoulder for a long time?

  1. Where do you live Miami!!????

    I agree with you!

I hate people who do that!! Not only are they putting lives in danger it is pissing me off that they are cutting in line!

You wouldn't go to a bank line and just step in front of someone!! You'd get your butt kicked!

This is what I did in Miami......sometimes, I could get away with blocking those idiots. I just stayed in the shoulder so no one could get through keeping my place in line. I will not let anybody fill up the shoulder.  Some people would take my spot on the lane not knowing what I was doing.

I always let someone get in that needs to t exit but not after he goes on the shoulder and tries to cut over and cut everybody off that's been waiting in line.

  2. Driving on the shoulder is illegal.

I saw some cops set a light to be red on a busy highway (Rt 1) where there was an exit just around the curve, and they were around the curve pulling over every car that went down the shoulder to get to the exit. When they had 20 or so cars pulled over, they set the light back to normal operation.

  3. wrong

  4. Yea people do that. It gets annoying. The shoulder is not a passing lane. Its for emergencies.

  5. the hard shoulder should not be used for the purpose it was used for.. should be kept clear at all times, unless it was an emergency..

i wouldnt mind, so long as they know what they were doing, and noticed that i would still be moving forwards.

  6. I hope you'd get pulled over if you did it and given the largest fine allowed in your state.

    Good luck!

  7. Driving on the shoulder is not allowed in this state. I live in Ma.
