  1. cameras on the traffic lights are recording 24/7, fixed cameras take pictures,

  2. Traffic light cameras can be either grey or yellow and work in the same manner as other fixed gatso 's and flash you if you cross on a red light instead of exceeding the speed limit.  This type of camera does not have a video recording system and just stores a picture of your vehicle crossing on a red light.  I can only comment for the area that i live (south West) as i'm sure other parts of the UK use different systems.

  3. Traffic light cameras work on different principles and algorithms. They use induction loops built in the road to work out if a car crossed the line once the light is red. (notice strange patterns on road where such cameras are installed).

Speed cameras on the other hand use reflective rays to calculate the speed of the car.

However, I am not sure if these two properties can be combined digitally.

  4. No I think they are both the same for speeding - just different brands/design/digital.  The cameras that get you for jumping red lights are normally little cameras on top of the traffic lights.

  5. Yellow / highlighted cameras (ie the digital ones that u see on the motorway that had to have a bright yellow background put behind them after a change in the law a few yrs ago as people complained they werent obvious enuff) are for SPEEDING OFFENCES

Grey ones, at traffic lights, only come into play when the lights are on RED - they cannot prosecute for speeding as they have to be yellow  to do this.

  6. Ashley, what is an honet answer?  I'm afraid you might be area specific.  I see the grey fixed and they tell me what they are before I enter the intersection.  The last one I saw said it was for a red light violation.

  7. The Dept of Transport agreed to make all speed camera's "Highly visible" They did this simply by coating existing grey cameras with a yellow reflective substance. However, there are overhead speed cameras on the M25 gantries, the cameras are actually quite small so they have put a yellow border around the installation point on the gantry. The temporary cameras at motorway roadworks are again quite small and are yellow coated. The fixed cameras at traffic lights are normally grey and  do not "Police" speeders only motorists who fail to comply with the traffic light signal. i.e red light. There has been talk of making those dual purpose i.e. speed cameras also. As a practical point, the cameras at traffic lights , to become dual purpose, the road carriageway would need to be marked with the familiar white lines so as to be able to calculate speed of vehicles once a picture has been taken.

  8. the yellow ones are speed cameras. the gray ones are red light cameras.they only take a pic if you go through a red light.
