Tragedy in anime ; recommendations ?

I am searching for anime which has elements of *tragedy , e.g. the hero/heroine meets with a tragic end .

*("Pride goes before the fall.")

Try Saikano or elfen lied. I must warn you though, the story is very dark, full of gore and depressing albeit a very good one.

My friend recommended them to me, although I didn't understand why I still watched them despite the warning hehehe.

... hmm that's all I can think of. The rest I can think of aren't exactly tragedy as much as they are sad, or bitter sweet. Not much "pride goes before the fall" idea... maybe Paradise Kiss has a little bit of pride in it...
