  1. Yes, we went through this too! Portables are just what lots of school divisions have to look at now, when they don't want to add on to a building because of fluctuating student populations.

We as parents didn't like it much, but the kids deal with it totally fine. There are no problems with emergencies, don't worry the principal and teachers have things all planned out - but make sure you ask them about that specifically if you want.

For us, the only tougher part was winter, because we get tons of snow and it's very cold. The portable was kept warm, but then it was a hassle having to dress up and go back and forth to the school.

  2. Be thankful yours aren't drinking their milk out of plastic bags.

  3. why? because your daughters to good for them? theyll be fine just relax there totally safe and aircinditioned

  4. We have portables is what they call them in our district. It is just the same as the other classes. Same size and they get their own bathroom they do not share it with another class. Also the A/C & heat work a lot better because it is on its own.

I work for the school district and last year I worked in a portable. the only thing is they are a little louder is all. It is very safe our have gates we can close on the windows and we lockdown that classroom the same as all the others. It is actually closer to the playground than all the other classes, so you could get to it faster in an emergency.

What is sad is the over crowding not the fact it is a portable. They are just as safe in my opinion. We do have an open campus layout though.

  5. I had a few classes in portables, as did my child.  I found them to be great...because they have better heaing and cooling systems than standard classrooms.  They are safe.  Your child will be just fine.

    All the best.

  6. Why does your child have a class in a trailer? I had a few classes in trailers when I was in 6th grade because they were remodeling the school. It really sucked because it was very hott. I know they will have evacuation plans in case of emergencies--its required by law.

If having classes in trailers is a permanent thing--I would consider switching schools though.

  7. Don't worry!  The important parts of the classroom experience are how well the kids get along, what kind of atmosphere the teacher creates and how the kids feel about themselves.  I have seen trailers that weren't the best (cold, stuffy, dusty) but the classroom was vibrant and very happy.  I have seen newer model, very fancy trailers for classrooms that were not such happy or interesting places.

Life won't always be cushy; use this as a teaching moment to help your child to deal with adversity.

  8. A LOT of my schools classrooms are trailers

    i dont like it >:(

    ...lol

  9. At one time I was the commanding officer of all the clerical, personnel, disbursing, storekeeping and postal clerks schools in San Diego.  Our entire complex was housed in "trailer classrooms" and they were much, much better than the older stucco building classrooms.

Each unit had independent heating and air conditioning, toilet facilities and other amenities.

Everything was modern and very comfortable.

They are perfectly safe and can be relied on in case of a "lockdown".

  10. When I was in High School, I had a couple of classes in trailers while my school was renovating, and I saw no problem with it. I actually liked it more, because the A/C worked GREAT in the trailers during those hot summer days, while the school itself was burning up inside! It didn't effect my education at all, if anything, it helped myself and my classmates concentrate more on class, because we were comfortable in the A/C. The trailers were literally maybe 20 feet outside one of the side entrances of the school, so if there were some kind of lockdown, we were just moments away from being safe inside. That was never a problem at my school though.

  11. Portable classrooms are safe. They usually have A/C because it can get pretty hot, so no need to worry on the hot summer days. They are just as safe as other classrooms, and in some cases safer because they are not in the school building if there is an emergency in the school. I never went to a school with a portable classroom, but I have known people who have. I am also a teacher, so I have been to schools with these types of classrooms. The portable classrooms are usually a result of a higher population at the school and not enough classroom space. Have a great school year!!!
