Train A and Train B?

Train A and B traveling same direction on parallel tracks. Train A is traveling at 40 mph and train B is traveling at 60mph. Train A passes station at 12:15am. If train B passes the same station at 12:27am. at what time will B catch up to A?

  1. Well...

    It looks like train "B" passes the same station 12 minutes after train "A".

    So, how long will it take train "B" to make up those 12 minutes?

    If "x"= hours after train "B" passes the station, then

    60*x must equal 40*(x+12/60), or

    60x = 40x + 8

    Solve for "x",

    convert that from hours to minutes, and

    add that to 12:27 am.

    This all assumes that neither train hit the DED or hotbox detector...

    The Power Bureau will order the trains doubled together for fuel conservation.

    Now "non-clearing," and with Amtrak still eleven hours hours away, they are dumped in the hole in the only siding for 285 miles that will hold the train.

    This was in 1993.  Last I heard, they're still waitin'...

    But actually, 9:45 PM.  No... wait... that was the answer the last time you asked this question.  I see the times are different this time around.

  3. "Leroy" is right.  This is a math problem and belongs in the "HOMEWORK HELP" section.  Just because it contains the word "train" does not mean it belongs in the "TRANSPORTATION" category.

  6. I am so sorry for what I am about to post here, but railroaders are NOT the ones to be asking this type of question, we are usually such smart alecks that getting a straight answer to a math problem is not very likely in this forum.

    Ask a specific train question and you will get more than you bargained for  LOL.

    so here is my answer:

    Never:

    Train A is a local and has to stop and work at every station and dies on his hours of service.

    They are relieved, stop at a restaurant on the way in for a 'burger, they each put a couple bucks together for lottery tickets and win, they go home and live happily ever after. Rango bought a fishing boat and moved to Alaska and was never seen again, his partner moved to a beachhouse on the Caribbean and is surrounded by . . . . . . . . . yikes, drifting off again, what was the question ??

    It's more like physics or math.  Think about the nature of what you're asking.  Not just what the words say.  

    Anyway, you should do your own homework.
