I'm currently at college studying GVEC wich means General vocational Education course. And i want to be a train driver after i've finish college. And you have to be 20 years of age to get training and i'm not 20 until next November. Could i still get training like in September? And if not what can i do while i wait until i'm 20?

  1. In Uk it is Train driver. Also it's handy to have a car driving licence. Kevin M gives very good advice.

  2. You have to 21 and with full health (if you are colour blind or had laser eye treatment you can't drive trains) before you can apply to be a train driver and it's tough to make it through the application process. Most train companies now tend to promote existing staff to this role, although some do take on new people and train them. 'One' takes on and trains new drivers for example.

If you do want a job on the railways in the mean time apply for a guards position or platform staff if available. Find out who your local TOC is and where their depot is in relation to where you live as this will also be a factor when applying as a train driver.

Bear in mind the course is long and hard. It could take upto 2 years depending on how much route knowledge and how many traction types used.

Best of luck, I started last year and it's the best thing I did.

P.S. The money is pretty good too

  3. i dont know about this you can visit raiways site

  4. It kinda depends on your country

But i think your age has to be exactly 20 in most countrys

  5. You will find it difficult to be a train driver in the uk at 20, many of the companies will require you to be 21 to drive a train. Also depending on where you live you will have to be within 20 - 30 mins travel maximum from any depot that have drivers, so again you would have to enquire to the local TOC to you area.

I would suggest that you look for training on the railway as a Conductor, Guard, Platform Staff to tide you over until you re old enough as they will give you some understanding in the Rules and Regulations of the Railway. Conductor / Gaurds only have a few more rules to learn to becoming a Driver, Platform Staff have a little way more but learn the basics like PTS (Personal Track Safety) and Basic Safety Critical training.

Plus also you will recieve the internal job applicational forms and have a better chance to see where the Driver vacancies are and prove to the TOC concerned that you are dedicated enough to become a Railway Employee.

    Good Luck

  6. called a locomotive engineer and any railroad will be happy to train you.

must pass a test and be physically fit. cannot be color blind.

cannot have any DUIs or too many points on your license.

  7. you can learn what a "train driver" is called.  That may be a good place to start.

  8. Train driver - IE Engineer, the co-driver is a conductor.

I would look around where you live. See what the name on the side of the locomotive is. Then go to there web site. Most all have information pertaining to this on there sites.

The normal process for this is to become a conductor first, then after some time, you can go to the engineers school.

  9. You could go onto the aprrentership schemes that Network Rail run, but that might tie you down for longer than you want.

But I would say is speak to the HR department within the Train operating company that you want to work for, they may allow you take a job on a station and then move over into the trainee train driver posts as soon as you hit 20.

  10. You'd have to wait until next year, but you'd be able to take up positions close to being a train driver, e.g. maintenance or cleaning. Unfortunately, you have to have so much training and be a certain age to work at certain places.

  11. You want to be an engineer well most class 1 railroads require you be a conductor first. Then after a year or two depending on the railroad you will be required to take the engineer school.

  12. i love trains

  13. I wanna drive the little train at the zoo
