  1. You are hired by the TOC. If you join a TOC that operates 158s, you'll probably end up driving them but they won't be your only traction.

  2. work for a TOC, they will train you to drive the classes that they operate.

  3. Nobody's stopping you running a model MU :)

Any driving requires you to be certified to drive (i.e. TOC training + health and safety) and anything earning revenue requires you to be employed (either directly or indirectly) by a TOC.

However, drivers in training are allowed on the mainline under supervision.

  4. You have to work for one of the TOC's, Private rail companies like EWS, private haul line (preservation) or a light loco line (Tramway).  Otherwise you will not be premitted to tkae an engine out as the rules, guidance and controls that the RSSB (old HMRI / HSE) are very stringent.

Each TOC will train you in each specific stock they operate and need you to drive and you will need refresher, safety days and suitable and relevant publication updated every 2 - 3 months. You will also need a minimum of driving hours in daylight and darkness to qualify, and every 2 years sit another rules exam with a qualified inspector familiar with the track and stock.
