  1. you dont just show up and they train you to be the engineer. there are many other things to learn just to get used to the rail environment (and you may imagine ...it AINT like playing with model trains).

From the people i have spoken with,m you start on the basic jobs and they work u up to conductor/fire/similar, and once you have mastered all that, then if you still want to pursue it, they send you to engineer school.

Thats how quite a few CSX drivers have done it as its been explained to me.

  2. In Sydney, Australia. Look on the Railcorp website at www.railcorp.info/

They have all the recruitment info you will need. I actually work for them and the training isn't that overwhelming, pay attention and do what your trainers tell you and you will get through.

A few things that will help you is a capacity to follow instructions quickly and accurately, a strong sense of safety, for you and others. And, a knowledge of heavy machinary operations.

Give it a go. I have had no regrets since I made the decision to join, and I wouldn't go back. I hope this helps.

  3. Hello, mate.

I did see some of the rails operations while I was there, I don't know what type of air-brake systems are used, so the following suggestion may be useless to you.

My 360 is accessible right here.  Check out the posts headed "Hoghead's Highball" and start with number one.  This is not any form of an accredited course, but the information contained there may help get a leg up, although it only deals with Westinghouse air- brake equipment.

There are schools here in the States that are accredited and teaching pre-employment courses.  If there are some at your disposal that would be a good way to go.  But, with limited opportunity, it may not be financially practical, where here they range between $7,000 to $10,000 for a six week course.

    Good Luck.
