  1. I have not heard of any such reports and follow Amtrak quite closely.  If they have happened in the past I am almost sure that they are only isolated incidents.  In any event, while obviously not as fast as flying, Amtrak is a very safe, comfortable, and relaxing means of travel, especially if you are taking an intercity train (just don't expect the timetable to be exact as trains are usually at least a few minutes late since they use private freight railroads outside of the Northeast).

  2. Nope.

A drunk tried to hi-jack one with an empty wine bottle once, but that was long ago.

There are out of the way places where the trains will stop for passengers, however, and this can be unsettling at times.  On the other hand, some of the larger depots are in rather sketchy neighborhoods.  Railroad tracks aren't always in an up-scale place...

But, I think all can travel in relative security.  Amtrak has increased their security measures tremendously just within the last two weeks.  So, I would ride unafraid.

    Bon Voyage!

  3. Not true.  Amtrak is very safe, and robberies are unheard of.  They will enjoy their trip.

  4. Nobody robs trains anymore.
