I just took an early retirement from an airline and got hired with UP in Van Buren, AR for train service i have to train for 18 days and then i'll get a start date. What happens next and can i count on getting 40 hrs a week. I don't mind the irregular shifts, holidays etc I just don't want to move there and starve for hours. Please advise

  1. It's all about seniority with regard to what jobs you'll work and when.  The gravy comes with time.

But, these days carriers don't hire until the need is acute, usually, so I'd plan on getting all the work you can stomach.

Don't know where you are moving from, but bring lots of UV protection.

Of course you'll be working in 115 degree heat, but hey, like they say...  "It's a dry heat."

But, like I say, "115 degrees is 115 degrees."

The good news is you'll save all kinds of money not spent on good foul weather gear.

Seriously though, good luck to you.  Remember, statistically, those who get killed on duty usually have less than two years or more than 15 years experience.  Stay safe for a long career !

  2. Well if you hired on with up you have 14 weeks of training. This job is not a 40 hour a week job. there is no set schedule unless you are working yard jobs or locals. The railroad has always been feast or famine meaning that when theres work there lots of it and when theres not you get cut off until you get a little seniority. Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones that will never get cut off.
