  2. The purpose of Answers is to help people who don`t know, not to pamper your smug ego.Railway enthusiasts already get looked upon as weirdos ,you are not helping.

  3. Well, the 30 years I have spent in the industry will probably not allow me to tell you anything you don't already know, with the possible exception of...

...the proper spelling is efficiency, not efficency.

  5. Gee I won't even try to answer,Your probably much smarter than I am.I wouldn't want to make myself look silly in light of your superior knowledge! I do know how to spell efficient though!

  6. Freight trains are efficent?  Well, when I figure out what "efficent" is, I might be able to answer.  Oh, looks like I can't do that, you already know "all of this stuff".  Now the weight thing I might be able to answer, but is that weight on earth or some distant planet.  Or are we talking about a "Space Train"?  I think they weigh nothing, but then again, I am in no way as smart as you.  Is it a loaded or unloaded train?  If a train is loaded with birds and they are flying inside the boxcar, does the train weigh at all.  I am so confused about all this "train efficency" stuff.

To all the train nuts out there:  Long live the Fallen Flags of days past.

  7. In Britain the heaviest freight train is 2,000 tons. Moving this load by rail is about 10 times more efficient than moving it by road. It also results in 1/10 the amount of emissions.

This is because the inertia of a train is far less than that of a road vehicle. Also because the diesel-electric transmission used on e.g. the class 66 locomotive operated by EWS, Freightliner et al allows the diesel motor to operate at optimum efficiency while the torque is taken up by the traction motors.

A diesel-mechanical system as used on lorries would not be able to deliver the high tractive effort (around 50,000 lbs) needed to work a freight train.

  8. You don't really want me to quiz ya here in front of God and everybody, do ya?

I've done it before, ya know...   Didn't get reported, either.

Apparently, people will forgive such a blatant violation of Community Standards for the opportunity to see one full of themselves stew in their own juice...

But, since the gist of your question lies in what knowledge people in this particular forum possess, I can tell you that the lion's share of those who respond here are very knowledgeable folks, rails and 'civilians' alike.

Hang around more often and you may learn something...

Addendum:  Not a train nut, but thanks for the sentiment, aclsal.  However, the flag of the SP never fell, and won't, until the last of us are dead and gone...

It was never the railroad.  It was the people.

  9. Dayummmm, you really ought to be in politics or maybe a dispatcher with all that knowedge, you will find lots of company.

Us pore iggerant commoners shore are greatful two have peepel like ewe around to mayke us feel privelaged in yore eggzalted prezense.
