Question:

Train from Amherst, MA to Montreal?

I am interested in getting from Amherst, MA to Montreal by train. Used to be you could take the Vermonter to St Albans and then a bus up to Montreal. Amtrak apparently no longer provides thruway service to Montreal. Is there any other way from St Albans to Montreal?

Alternatively you can go to Albany (3 hours on the Lake Shore Limited) and then to Montreal (8 hours on the Adirondack).

Greyhound gets from Northampton to Montreal in 7 hours.

  1. Well, bus service via Amtrak as canceled from St. Albans to Montreal at the end of October, 2005 because of low ridership.  I think the only way to now get to Montreal by rail is via the Adirondack or a combination thereof (like the Lake Shore Limited.

  2. In nice weather, you can also take the train to Essex Junction, VT (the Burlington stop), take city buses down to the lake, and take the (seasonal) ferry across to Port Kent, NY (an Amtrak stop on the Adirondack).

I'm not sure how the schedules line up (the Adirondack is scheduled to go through this area around  early afternoon.
