  1. I use hyperdia to check all of my JR fares, times and routes.  You should check it out.  www.hyperdia.com  if you don't read japanese you can click the English button on the left hand sidebar.

  2. It's 540 yen one way.

  3. 1) by JR WEST

It costs 540yen from Osaka to Kyoto. It takes about 30 minutes by rapid train.

It is available for southern Kyoto, for example Toji temple.

    2) by Hankyu electric railway

It costs 390yen from Umeda to Arashiyama, Karasuma and Kawaramachi.

It is available for Arashiyama and central Kyoto. It takes about 40 minutes by limited express (no extra charge is required).

If you will go to Arashiyama, Hankyu is the only way.

    3)  by Keihan railway

It costs 400yen from Yodoyabashi or Kyobashi to Shichijo or Shijo.

For Sanjusangendo you should get off at Shichijo. For Higashiyama district and Gion you should get off at Shijo. It takes 45 or 50 minutes by limited express (no extra charge is required). If you will go to eastern Kyoto, Keihan is most available.

It costs 460yen from Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi. It takes 50 minutes. It is available for north eastern Kyoto.

Generally in Kansai private railways are cheaper and more usable than JR. (Some Japanese who live in Kanto seems to ignore the fact.)
